Apasionada por los capítulos ocultos de la historia, Ruta Sepetys da voz en esta ocasión a cuatro jóvenes protagonistas cuyos caminos se cruzan cuando son evacuados en el Wilhelm Gustloff, como los más de 4.000 niños  y  adolescentes que lo hicieron para ir al encuentro de su futuro. Nunca llegaron, pero sus historias no se hundieron con ellos.
